August 6, 1920 - May 28, 2014
Betty Jane Stevenson Grenier, 93, of Sun City, California passed away on May 28, 2014, in Fountain Valley, California after a brief illness.
Betty was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 6, 1920, and grew up in the Territory of Hawaii. She was the daughter of Augusta and Frank Stevenson. Betty graduated in 1938 from Roosevelt High School on Oahu. During her teen years she set two world records in long-distance swimming. She was a candidate for the 1936 Olympics in Germany; however, due to the depression the team was unable to make the trip.
Betty met her husband, Louis Grenier, during his military assignment to the Islands. The couple moved to Northern California where their two sons, Louis Achille Grenier III and Steven Edward Grenier were born. They were married for 66 years.
After living in several locations, the couple retired to Sun City, California. During her retirement, Betty was involved in several organizations and clubs. She joined the Sun City Sorority, "Delta Theta Chi", and served as president on several occasions. She was a member of The Sun City Swim Club for many years and served as president for two different terms. She appeared in annual water shows for over 30 years and was in charge of the "Aquacise Program of Gentle Water Exercise" for over 30 years. Betty also belonged to the Sun City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies' Auxiliary, the Illinois Club and TOPS.
In addition to her two sons, Louis and Steve, she is survived by two daughters-in-law, Patricia Grenier and Meredith Grenier, four grandchildren, Jennifer Luckham, Gordon Grenier, Tanya Martin and Meredith Weis. Great grandchildren are Ashley, Adelaide, Brett, Gavin, Natalie, Cooper, Noelle, Wyatt and Alaina.
Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a good friend to all who came in contact with her. We will miss her stories of the islands, her sweet spirit and her quick wit.
The family greatly appreciates the support and care received from Sanctuary Hospice, along with the devoted care, support and loving attitude of Gica's Home located in Fountain Valley.
