David Michael Pirnie, most recently of Hemet, CA, went home to the Lord on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Dave was born in Battle Creek, MI in 1935 and spent his early years living at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. While there, he developed his life-long interest in birds and other animals. He later moved to Lansing, MI, attended college, and completed the Naval Flight Training School in Pensacola, FL.
Commissioned as a Marine Corps officer, he served two tours in Viet Nam among his other travels and duties. He retired in 1977 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, having served as Commanding Officer of HMX-1 also known as Marine One. His decorations include the Legion of Merit which was awarded at the time of his retirement.
Not one to idle, he did not stay retired for long. He and his family spent one year in Colorado where he co-managed a condominium complex. Then, he moved to Hemet, CA and bought the Solar Heating Specialists business in Riverside. His career with the business lasted twice as long as his military career, and he developed a national reputation for fairness and quality construction. Dave spent his second retirement enjoying his grandchildren, swimming pool construction and service, bird watching and his keen interest in politics and world affairs. He also kept up his love of flying, and many generations of friends and family enjoyed his taking them up for flights in his airplane.
Dave is survived by Saundra, his wife of 66 years, a son Michael of McLean, VA, a daughter Mary of Hemet, and his sister Susan of Chelsea, MI. He is also survived by four grandchildren; all residents of California.
At the request of the family, there will be no memorial service or burial ceremony. Donations to Dave’s memory may be made to the Calicinto Ranch of San Jacinto.
