It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of LCDR Navy Retired Donald Ridgeway Aumont, affectionately known to many as “Dandy Don”. Don passed away on August 26th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born June 21st, 1943 to Mother, Dorothy Harrison and father, Donald J. Aumont in San Francisco, CA.
Don joined the enlisted ranks of the Navy in 1962 at the age of 19. He began his service in the aircraft maintenance arena. In the beginning of 1973, he met the love of his life and his future wife (or bride as he called her every day going forward) Ronni. In August of 1973, they were married. In 1976, Don and Ronni had their one and only child, Michelle. In 1986, after having made his way through the enlisted ranks to the rank of Chief, he transitioned into the officer ranks, becoming a maintenance supervisor. After 28 years and numerous tours overseas taking him all over the world, Don retired in January of 1991 as a Lieutenant Commander.
After retirement, in addition to spending some well-earned time on the golf course, Don would go on to earn his bachelor's degree in criminal justice, volunteer for the Sheriff’s department and drive busses for Riverside Transit Authorities in addition to a few other part-time jobs as ways of staying active and out of his bride's hair after his retirement.
In 1995, his daughter would introduce Don and his bride Ronni to a young man Jesse, who Don would mentor regarding a decision to join the military. That young man would just a year later become their cherished son-in-law.
Don was a strong, honorable, authoritative man. With a booming voice and large stature, he could often come across as intimidating. Those who were fortunate enough to know him however, knew that under that rough and gruff exterior was a loving, generous, empathetic man with an amazing sense of humor and a huge heart. His dedication to service and devotion to his family and friends were met with much love and respect.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ronni, daughter Michelle, and son-in-law Jesse as well as his extended family and many friends. His smile, the mischievous twinkle in his eyes and his warmth will forever be missed.
For all who would like to attend, there will be a celebration of life held on October 5, 2024 at 3:00pm. The location will be the Temecula Valley VFW at 28075 Diaz Rd, Temecula, CA 92590.
In lieu of flowers, if so inclined, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project in Donald R. Aumont’s name.
