Our incredible father and the great ol' coach, crossed the final goal line on Sunday, August 3 @ 8pm in Temecula, Calif. He lived 86 glorious years. "Stay strong," he would say. He did for so long. He fought and played an amazing last quarter. "Allelujah" dad, the pain is gone!
Born in Paynesville, Minnesota on March 16, 1928 to Norwegian immigrants, they moved to Big Sandy, Montana where dad's legacy would begin. His hard work ethic was formed at a young age taking care of the farm and his ailing mother while his father worked on an Indian Reservation. Dad always knew what he wanted to do with his life. In high school as a top athlete, he wanted to play baseball, basketball and football at the University of Montana and to someday be a football coach. Little did he know then what an unbelievable man, husband, father, grandfather he would become while inspiring and shaping hundreds of
lives. After high school he joined the Armed Forces and played basketball for the Air Force in Bremerton, Wa. Then back to college where he lettered in all three sports. This is when he met his beautiful, talented wife, Dona. She was skating on a homecoming float, and he knew that instant who he would marry.
He went on to coach Missoula High and then the University of Montana to numerous Championships. In between, along came the three of us, Lori, Dave & Eric. Thanks to the vision of then Fullerton Junior College President Dr. Lynn Sheller, in 1961 off to Fullerton we all went. The rest is history. What a wonderful life dad and mom gave to us. We were raised on the tennis courts and our playground was Fullerton College. We were so proud to be the kids of ?The Coach." We never missed a game. Dave and Eric wrestled on the sidelines while mom and I hollered from the stands. Dad was proud of us as well and our accomplishments. He was very calm on the football field, but when he did watch any of us compete in tennis he was a nervous
wreck!
It's hard to find a more dedicated, humble man with the work ethic and high standards that our father had. The stats compiled were unreal! There were the most wins in Junior College history, the Championships, and who could ever forget "The Teeth!" He had a very special way of bringing every young man together who walked through his office door to create an incredible bond and a winning tradition. His passion was shaping young lives for the future and he was the best at it! Hundreds went on to higher educations and successful lives. Dad enjoyed his retirement with his family, fellow coaches, and all the players and friends who visited. He travelled, hunted, fished, skiied, golfed, lived life! He cherished the times with his grandchildren, Ali & Sam. We are grateful for those valuble times together and the love shown.
You dreamed dad, you had the passion. You had the gift. We vision you with that famous, huge smile on your face, a glass of wine in hand, sitting on the deck looking over Flathead Lake, listening to mom sing and play her piano. Hal Sherbeck, our father, the coach, the legend. You will be greatly missed. You will remain an incredibly powerful force in our lives. We love you and know that your legecy will live on and on..... Always our father, Always a Hornet, Always in our hearts....
In lieu of flowers, we request any donations be made to the "Fullerton College Foundation" in our father's name. We wish to have a celebration of his life at Fullerton College that will ideally coincide with the unveiling of his statue at Sherbeck field. Imagine the stories players will tell their families and friends while viewing such a tribute.
