Jack Robert Brockbank of Hemet, California, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020 at the age of 91. He had been in excellent health, but was not feeling well for the last few days preceding his death. He died peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Betty McFarland Brockbank.
Jack was born in Price, Utah on October 16, 1928 to his father Robert Isaac Brockbank, and mother, Olive Holding Brockbank. His dear sister Phyllis Brockbank Morgan preceded him in death.
He and his sister spent most of their childhood in Santa Ana, California. Jack loved body surfing at the nearby beaches and was selected as top student of his graduating class by the students and faculty. His mother died of breast cancer when he was 10 years old. His father remarried a dear friend of the family, Bessie Lundquist. Much later when Bessie passed away he married Mary Lundquist. Jack was blessed with not just one sweet mother but three.
After receiving his A.A. degree and graduating junior college he served a 2 1/2 year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France. Upon returning, he attended UCLA to complete his pre-dental coursework and then moved on to UC San Francisco dental school. That was a fortuitous move because that is where he met his best friend and wife-to-be, Betty McFarland. They were married in the Idaho Falls temple on August 3, 1954. A year later he graduated from UC San Francisco dental school with B.S. and D.D.S. degrees.
Jack and Betty started their family almost simultaneously with his graduation. At that time he also began his two-year service in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He started a private dental practice in Ventura, CA in 1957 and later moved his practice to Ojai, CA where their family resided for many years. He retired in Ojai after 36 years of dentistry.
He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and held many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Bishop of the Ojai, CA ward. Jack and Betty made many life-long friendships in Ojai. They also served a full-time mission together in Birmingham, Alabama.
Family was so important to Jack. He and Betty had a beautiful marriage of almost 66 years and four children were blessed to be in their family: Diane Rowley, Laurie deRoque, Nancy Meppen, and Bryan Brockbank. They have 17 grandchildren and 35 greatgrandchildren who love and adore them.
We will all miss Grandpa Brockbank so much but are truly grateful we were able to be with him so many years. He was a stalwart example to all of us.
