

Joe Karcher, beloved of his family, friends and patients, passed away on December 12 in Hemet. He was born in Canton, China on September 20, 1930 of missionary parents. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1941, and he received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.
Joe served for three years as a medical missionary in Pakistan before moving to Hemet in 1963. He practiced medicine in Hemet until his retirement in 1997. He was a co-founder of the first Hemet hospice, serving as medical director for many years. He served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
Joe loved his work as a doctor. He was devoted to his family and friends. He especially enjoyed travelling. His many travels took him to all seven continents. He loved music, and especially enjoyed singing in choirs and in the Harmoneers Chorale. He was also an accomplished photographer.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Franklin and Mary Karcher, his brother Jim, and his former wife Nancy. Surviving him are his wife Sylvia, his brother John, daughters Kathryn Karcher (Jeff) and Jennifer Karcher, son Chris Karcher (Jill), nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
