My favorite day was when I knocked over her syrup mix and she swore at me in Italian then explained exactly how big of a mess I just made....

I am sorry to hear of Maria's passing, I send my condolences to her family.

There is not enough space to write about this beautiful lady.  We first met her when Joe and she ran the tailor shop where Datilo's Restaurant is now located.  When their life's dream was realized and the restaurant opened, we visited as often as possible.  She and Joe would visit the table of each guest and talk, just like Hans and Greta used to at The Anchor, an art lost in today's restaurants.  She radiated her love for Joe, her family, and all people she came into contact with on a daily basis. When we saw her outside the restaurant, she was the same, she was just a naturally beautiful person.  We will miss her and all those times we spent together, but we will always have the memories of her.


We wish her and the family peace at this time.

I have known Maria for more than 40 years. When her and Joseph first moved to Hemet we were neighbors..She was a wonderful friend .. kind and generous .. She was one of  the hardest working women I have ever known.. What a legacy she has left her family..Datillos will never be the same without her smile and humor...

How lucky we are that you and Joseph ended up in Hemet!  Not only have I enjoyed your food over the years, but the one-of-a-kind family atmosphere that you created is warm and personal..  
I marveled that you treated all customers like they were family.
I always appreciated that you said exactly what’s on her mind, even it is wasn’t politically correct.
I will miss your loaves of sourdough bread, especially the “M” carved in to crust.  (Your “M” was better than Zorro’s “Z”!).
Even though your body is no longer with us, your spirit and positive impact will continue through the family and friends you have touched.

I was so saddened to hear of her passing.  One of my fondest memories (and there were many) of Maria was one of the first times we ate in her restaurant with our daughter.  My daughter was under 2 years old and was very busy...constantly moving and walking through the restaurant.  My husband was getting nervous that she couldn't stay seated.  Maria noticed my husbands concern and came over to our table and told us "This is a family restaurant.  She is welcome to do anything she wants.  Relax and enjoy yourselves.."  Soon after the kitchen door opened, her granddaughter came wheeled out on top of one of the serving carts.  Maria looked at me from across the room and smiled.  "See!"  I will always remember her loving, no nonsense spirit....and her amazing food.  Always worth the wait!  We love you Maria!!!  All our love, the Balistreri-Ochoa family.

Such a shock to discover the passing of such a wonderful woman. She was the "Sunshine" in Dattilo's. 
My family are coming here, in May & were looking forward to meeting her. We are So Saddened.

For the last many years we have known Maria as patrons of the restaurant and been charmed by her wit and fun attitude. She made everything so good along with the rest of the family that the drive from Redondo Beach never seemed to matter. We have great memories of some events here, our RE/MAX charity dinner for the Children Miracle's network and our son and wife's pre wedding  dinner reception. We shared many delicious meals at Datillo's and often took guests.  We knew there was always a little wait for our meal, but one time a guest complained about the wait.
