December 22, 1942 – March 15, 2026
Michael Martin McCoy passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marie, and their three daughters: Melinda and her son Thomas; Michelle and her husband John John; and Morgan and her husband Arron, along with their daughter Kimberly. His family was his greatest joy, and he carried immense pride in each of them. Becoming a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of Michael’s life. He cherished watching his grandson Thomas dream of becoming a baseball player, just as he once did himself, and took immense pride in seeing that passion carried forward. When Kimberly was born, she brought him a renewed sense of purpose and tenderness, and his final wish was to ensure she would always be cared for and surrounded by love.
Michael was born in Indiana and spent his early years in Escondido, California. His childhood was filled with adventure and unforgettable moments like summer parties in Palma Valley where he met President Ronald Reagan, and days when John Wayne himself crafted cap guns for him and the neighborhood kids. He later lived in Boulder City, Nevada, where his best friend’s father taught the boys how to box, a skill and discipline Michael carried with him throughout life.
He eventually returned to Escondido and attended Escondido High School before completing his senior year in Taipei, Taiwan. While living abroad, he had the remarkable opportunity to meet President Dwight D. Eisenhower during a parade and celebration, an experience he cherished.
Michael met the love of his life, Marie, at a local bar, and the two married the following year. Together they built a beautiful life and raised three daughters who adored him. To many in the community, he was known simply as “Coach Mike.” Whether on the softball field, the soccer field, or even in the ring after hours at the Del Mar Fair, he coached anyone willing to learn. His booming laugh could be heard from blocks away, and his smile had a way of lighting up any room he entered.
Michael was a man defined by compassion. He loved people without hesitation or judgment, embracing everyone regardless of their past or present circumstances. He answered to many names; Michael, Mikey, Mike, Big Mike, Coach Mike, Dad, Grandpa, PopPop, but no matter what you called him, knowing him meant being blessed by his presence.
His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
