"Muriel Burns passed away on May 16th 2011, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born and raised in Stephenville, Newfoundland, a self-governing British colony that joined Confederation with Canada in 1949. She is survived by five children: Roxanne Perez, Jacqueline Selner, Christopher Selner, Dawn Burns, and Rebecca Bustos.
She is additionally survived by seven grandchildren: Diego, Damien, Laura, Niko, Jovon, Valina, and Gavin. Further, she is survived by her sister Effie, as well as many nieces and nephews, all from Newfoundland.
Although a native Newfoundlander, Muriel loved California and made it her home, but she ensured that her children knew their heritage through her "back in Newfoundland" stories. She was outgoing, and made friends with everyone. Her hobbies included country music and dancing, bingo, growing geraniums, and she loved a good ghost story. She was an animal lover and there was never a time that cats and dogs didn't run around the house. Muriel was an excellent cook, and her children and grandchildren share fond memories of stew, corned beef, homemade bread, and fudge. Muriel is now at peace and will be missed by all who knew and loved her."
