Sonny Boy
I was always proud to be a younger cousin of Sonny Boy. He had a big impact on me, my being 7 years younger then him. My brother Ray Ray and I always looked up to our older cousins Kirtland and Sonny growing up in Damon Track. We lived there with all our cousins in the 50s. He would sing (papa u mau mau papa u mau mau), play agates (marbles), and strum the ukulele. Once an older kid was picking on Ray and me (I must of been six), and we told Sonny and Kirtland. They caught the kid, tied him up to a papaya tree, and lit a cheery bomb next to him--they would take the law into their own hands. As an adult Sonny would visit my wife Annie and me in Wahiawa. He always had a big smile, and was respectful when he visited us. He was lots of fun and full of life! I'm going to miss you cuz.

My older cousin
When I was growing up, Sonny Boy and another cousin Kirtland  were the "elders," guys we younger cousins respected and even feared.  Sonny Boy was always the man with the answers. But in the mid-eighties, he lived with me one summer and we became really close.  He treated me as his equal.  We used to go running together, worked with me in my garden, go to the beach and cruise around Waianae.  We would talk for hours about our families and everything else.  He was always neat, clean and respectable. When he talked to my parents on the phone he was always nice. Like me, he was a free spirit- that's why we got along well.  I will always love and remember you cuz.

Hi Family,

Sending my condolences in the passing of Sonny Boy.  My name is Adele Castellano, cousin to Sonny Boy. His mother, Aunty Rose is my dad's sister (Alfred Francisco Baang) and my Godmother.  I can't remember when the last time I seen him here in Hawaii.  But my brother Alfred (Kirtland) and he were very close in age.  My dear brother Kirtland also passed away last July.

Our entire families lived in Damon Track, close to the Honolulu Airport.  I remember going to the park at the school and him pushing me on the swing, I believe when we moved to Ewa we did see alot of them as well. He and Kirtland were always together.

My love and prayers to all of you, his spouse, children and grandchildren.  May God comfort you and give you peace in the passing of a wonderful man.

This guy, who used to come to our house in Ewa with his souped up flat head V-8 1950's Mercury and picked up my oldest brother Al (Kirt) then go over to some drive-in along the Honolulu Airport where a lot of the now 70 yr old cats used to hang out, would race, then, eat, then race some more (before he raced some more), into the night and listen to "grease music," you-know, where the guys and chicks did some serious squeezing after listening to those 50's 'melt in my arms music,' ......was a pretty special cat. 
Here is a special tribute to that Cat, my cousin Sonny, who has a special place in my heart forever. Love you cuz.

I am saddened by the loss of my brother but I know that he is with our mother and in a better place, no longer in pain. Our prayers and thoughts are with Sonnyboy's family. Our deepest condolences and love to all of you.
