Integrity
I am grateful to have worked for and to have known such an honorable man. When I think of Russell the word integrity comes to mind. "Integrity is beyond honesty... as honesty is limited to words. Integrity is the action of truth... by living what we say and being who we are." I believe this describes Russell F. Dix. We share in the sadness and mourn the passing of a very special man.

Russell is missed by us all. We are proud to have been part of his team for many years. He was a great person and we are all very lucky and better individuals for having worked with Russell.

My condolences to the family. I met Russell many years ago when I was working for the County of Los Angeles and met him last a few months ago. It is difficult to see that he is gone. He was a gentleman and always pleasure to work with him eventhough it was all about "garbage." He will be missed!

Russell was a man of tremendous integrity and I enjoyed working for him. He will be greatly missed.

"My Boss and Friend"
I am proud and count it an honor to have been a part of your team, Russell. My memories of Russell, Teresa's husband, a man of great faith, a dad, a brother, a grandpa, too many a friend and of course "my boss" for many year; 15 years ago. I don't exactly recall the first moment I met Russell but I do recall meeting him and talking to his team, Briggeman; you were immediately taken back by the mutual respect and care he had for his former team and they for him. The next significant meeting was taking over a new member to his team Community Relations, Morrey M., to Los Nietos and introducing him to this newest member. Shortly there after the announcement came and he became the GM of the Long Beach division. He worked long and hard hours starting early in the a.m. with safety observations etc. then late into the evening at city council meetings; budget times were even more so the challenge - ask Bob W. Bob worked so hard he didn't even take time to eat or sleep; result was he "keeled" over right in the middle of one of their planning sessions. I think they were 'padding' the budget they were going to be reviewing the next day with us (Ron K, Region and self).

The experiences I had during Russell's tenure as AP generated many laughs; his laughter was contagious, many 'stoic' moments, many tears, many "I just got the look" (Russell saying that to me) moments and of course business learning opportunities. His first comment to me was to meet him at SFS for introductions; he proceeded to let me know that "he was not a hugger". I thought oh great SFS are full of 'huggers' (Cal Waste, A&G, Peoples Disposal and CDS). I positioned myself so most could just handshake while I quietly got the message out. Russell loved giving you a 'hard time'. We were at an area review in Gardena with Jim O'Conner, Todd Holmes, the regional team (Art, Brad, Jim, Brian, Brett and etc.) and he told me I was taking Jim and Todd to the airport; yes the airport..... Orange County for that matter. For those who don't know I have no sense of direction; so the journey was frightening to me. The journey was full of questions all about Atlas. I did my part and answered them as best I could; I knew the ins and outs of Atlas as I was there from the start. He knew I would be nervous just driving let alone answering questions; he also knew I was being interviewed. I momentarily accepted this position and then within 24 hours changed; Russell was so happy I stayed in my role and so was I. We had a tough year that following year and Russell and I had to deliver news to two employees' families that their loved ones were not coming home that night. While waiting for the first family member to arrive Russell received a phone call from our beloved Gardena GM; his illness had come back. At the same time we saw a young lady with a small child enter the home we were to visit. Right away another side of Russell surfaced; he knew what to say and do. While the meeting was very sad his compassion for the family and his understanding of what they were going through made all those present at ease. The second fatality that took place involved the dad of the family; he had been killed while training a new driver in support of a recent contract, Redondo Beach. This hit Russell very hard and yes I had to step in. The son had left that morning without saying good bye to his dad and that troubled Russell greatly. We heard of the many times when Russell left his home in the early hours of the a.m.; 'I nearly stepped on my kid" that was lying in his hallway; sorry kids I can't remember if he said his daughter or son.

Closer to home; I returned from a corporate visit and went straight on vacation; I was not feeling well. Upon my return Monday I called Russell to let him know I would be late; Dr.'s appointment. He was very aware of HIPPA and asked "do you wish to share"; my response was "later, it is probably nothing". It was more than nothing. I went back to work and told him I needed more test; compassionate yet understanding the type of person I was he assured me all would be good and "we will get through this". The day I received the new that I had cancer I was traveling to Chiquita, RC and then Del Norte with Alicia. Once I dropped Alicia off Russell called and talked to me all the way home till he heard I was home and safe in Dan's care; this was before the cell phone laws. His caring mannerism helped me more than anyone can know. He tagged teamed with my husband as to how I was really doing, he coined the phrase "you had a bad eyebrow morning" (meaning my eyebrows were uneven), he made sure I had a micro for my trainings, a portable bag for lap top and always asked what food I wanted for our meetings. As the chemo continued he always made sure between he, Donna and Gina spumoni ice cream was part of the menu. Union negotiations bought some memorable personal moments like climbing the stairs and my purse was pulling my wig off; Russell "your wig is falling"; he took my purse... yes Russell carried a purse. Again at Chiquita the wind was blowing so bad I was lose my wig; again he took my purse so I could hold onto my hair; I guess he didn't want to freak everyone out and delay the meeting. Every time I was released from hospital he and Donna had plant/flowers delivered to me and pictures of my previous races were splatter across my office door with words of encouragement for my return, not just to work but to my passion for running. He would assure me each time I went into hospital that I would be back and I was; while only for a short while before changes hit a number of us again.

Russell and I both had our interviews with the new team the same day. Mine started before his; I knew changes were coming. He called right after his and we talked his whole journey back (again before cell phone laws). We would spend many hours talking; reviewing where we had been, where we had come, many laughs, many serious moments. This all came to a head when he called me and said "I am joining you". I thought he was gone; no he had cancer. We talked about what was ahead; Russell remained positive, hopeful of a cure, and focused on his faith, wife, family and Republic Services. My last conversation with Russell was about his 'battles' yet he steered the conversation back to me, my family and of course my granddaughter.

He was a courageous man; a man I will never forget, a man who helped me through many personal challenges. Today, he is gone; his legacy will live on for every!

19 years ago God blessed me by allowing me to meet a truly wonderful man Russell. He was so proud to be the husband of his wife Teresa of 35 years,father to his beautiful children, grandfather to his grandchildren but also was very dedicated to his faith, church, his employees and job. I am who I am because of him and have never met a more loving, caring, encouraging man as Russell. I know I am not the only one to say how honored I am to have been blessed by his friendship and will miss him so very deeply. May you rest in peace my friend I miss you so much.

Russell you are a man of true beauty, life, selfiness and love. All of us who are blessed to know you are so truly blessed by God. Russell you will never be forgotten and you will live in me every single day. You are truly my guardian angel and I wait for the day until we meet again my friend in life eternal. God Bless you my friend. I love and miss you today and always. You are the most AMAZING man I have ever had the opportunity to be honored to meet and work with. God bless you.

My Condolences to the family... I did not know Russell that well while I was working at Consolidated Disposal but the little that I did know of him only gave me a good feeling. I recently lost my mother and no matter how much you prepare you are never prepared enough. The only thing I can tell you is that the pain will decrease with time. God Bless you. Sincerely, Palmira

Russell will be missed. Great Area President who truly cares and always try to do whats best for his employees. It is my honor to have the chance to work and learn so much from such a great boss and a great person. I will always remember Russell.

To the Dix Family. I worked with Russell at Briggeman and then later at Consolidated. I always loved working for him. He was a man of integrity, compassionate and fair. I truly enjoyed working with him and will miss him. My prayers are with you.

I was lucky to be part of his workforce, he led by great example- always kind yet decisive. He will be sorely missed.

Russell touched many lives and made them better for it. I am blessed for the time we were able spend together a few months before his passing.

To the Family. I am sure that no words can fill the loss your family has incurred. Russell's character, integrity and compassion will continue to be a guiding light for all to follow for years to come. I am only one of the many that will miss him. God Bless.

Russell, a man who embraced family, life, his beliefs and friends; we are thankful for the opportunity to have known such an amazing person.

Russell will be truly missed. I enjoyed the many years I worked with him. I will miss his smile and the kindness that he showed to others.

I have indeed lost one of my closest and dearest friends. I am over come with emotion at his passing. My prayers are with the family in all respects.
He will be missed by us all very much. I regret not being able to attend his service as I am in Utah and will not return until the first week in August. His spirit will always be felt in my life. He will always be in my eyesight a
 special spiritual giant that embraced the gospel.
