

Samuel was born on November 13, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the son of the late Samuel Mimms, Sr. and the late Mozella Griffin Mimms. He was the husband of Ruth Jones Mimms for 57 years.
Samuel was the eldest of eight siblings. After twenty six plus very successful years in the U.S. Navy Samuel or "Sammy Jr" to his loved ones, "Sam" to the fellows retired from the Navy, went back to school, earned a California teaching credential, and then spent the next twenty yearas with the San Diego Community College District teaching Principles and Theories of effective learning, Interpersonal Communications, and Currieculum Development.
Samuel and his beautiful wife of, 57 years, who is more than ever the love of his life, his soul mate and best friend Ruth B. Mimms partnered in rearing four sons: Edward A., Samuel W. III, Darryl P., and Eric B. Mimms. Darryl joined the Air Force for 4 years; and when the youngest son left the nest to join the U.S. Navy, Sam and Ruth proved that wisdom does not necessarily come with age. They went out and brought in three more children; two adopted daughters, Makeda A. and Ambria N. and took on guardianship for one son, Deondrae Brooks.
Samuel was fond of most sports and was in a softball league in the Navy sporting several tropies, was an avid golfer; proudly making a hole-in-one, and was a grand champion at TV watching. Sam became a Domino in 1978, a union he has never once regretted. He was also proud to be a Mason, and a member of the Zulu Social Club in New Orleans.
Samuel is survived by his wife Ruth, sons, Eric Mimms, Edward Mimms, Samuel Mimms III, Darryl Mimms, and Deondrae Brooks, daughters, Makeda, and Ambria, grandchildren, Angela, Ruth Janet, Edward II, Nathan, Berry, Tyrone, Kameron, Evan, Samuel IIII, Sirin, Sihira, Michael, and Mikayla, and 10 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
