Susan Bernard passed away at home with her daughters by her side on February 3, 2012, at the age of 79. She was born in Greenspond, Newfoundland, Canada on October 26, 1932 to William and Martha Granter. She married Rodolphe (Rudy) Bernard in Quebec City in 1952 upon his return from serving in the Korean War as a member of the famed Royal 22nd Regiment of the Canadian Forces, the "Van Doos".
She is survived by her two daughters who live in Simi Valley: Sylvia (Tommy Thompson) and Dawn (Lester Kozlowski) as well as two grandchildren, Amanda and Daniel Kozlowski. She has one surviving sister, Trix White of St. Johns, Newfoundland.
While they were a young family, Susan, Rudy and the girls moved from Canada to Southern California for the wonderful opportunities and great weather. They proudly became American citizens 5 years later.
Always a hard worker, Susan was able to accomplish whatever she set her heart and mind to. After the death of her husband when she only 47, she enrolled in college to attain her lifelong dream of being a registered nurse. Upon graduation, she moved to Hemet and worked as a nurse at Hemet Valley Hospital until her retirement. She was an avid world traveler and active volunteer for many organizations.
After living in Hemet for over 25 years, she had recently moved to Thousand Oaks to be near her daughters.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Hillcrest Royale Retirement Residence and Buena Vista Hospice for their love and care. In addition, we thank her physician in Hemet, Dr. Rakesh Gupta, for his exceptional care during the last few years of her life.
