Barbara, known affectionately as “Bobbie” to her close friends and family, was born in Newark, NJ on December 20, 1939 and was predeceased by her loving husband Joseph Winkelried Sr, her mother and father and her sister Mary, and is survived by her sister Florence (Babe) O’Brien and daughters RoseAnne Winkelried of Henderson NV, Robin Volesky of Jupiter FL, sons Joseph Winkelried Jr of Manahawkin NJ and William Winkelried of Henderson, NV as well as 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren,
Barbara was a long-time resident of South Orange, NJ before moving with her family to Manahawkin, NJ in 1966. Barbara worked as a data entry specialist for Broad Data Systems of Toms River, but was very involved in her community, holding positions such as Secretary and Head Scorekeeper of the Stafford Little League and assisting in the creation and development of the Stafford Soccer Club. Barbara annually worked as an Electioneer for all the primary and November elections but found time to attend all of her children’s activities and games, one of the OG “soccer moms.”
Barbara will be remembered as a very hard worker who instilled an incredible work ethic into all of her children, but always found the time and energy to be the ultimate mother, cooking dinner every night and always being available when needed, despite working all hours of the night. Barbara loved Christmas and made sure she did a Christmas Club through her bank each year for her and her kids to make sure they always had the best Christmas every year while spending each Christmas Day with the Winkelried family.
Barbar was the smartest, wisest and loving wife and mother who was very fond of board games, scrabble, rummikub, and games shows, especially Jeopardy where she appeared to know all of the answers on a nightly basis. Barbara was a huge sports fan, with her favorite teams being the New York Yankees, New York Giants and New York Rangers but her knowledge of Yankees history remains unmatched. Barbara knew every Yankee player from the 1940’s on and looked forward to Old-Timers Day every year when she would reminisce about all the player’s she grew up watching. Barbara was a huge fan of the US Open Tennis, her favorite was Jimmy Connors, and the Pro Bowlers Association which she watched religiously on Saturday afternoons. This was often her reward for a morning spent cleaning the house while blasting her favorite musician, Johnny Mathis, on her stereo while her children assisted with housekeeping duties. Barbara competed in the Stafford Bowling League for decades and was known for her left-handed stroke and for being a consistent teammate, never missing a competition in all her years of bowling.
Barbara moved to Henderson, NV in 1987 with her husband Joseph Winkelried Sr, and continued to work as a medical information and supervisor of billing while being a doting grandmother to her growing family. Barbara loved playing Bingo and slot machines at all of the casinos, her favorite being the Paris Hotel. Barbara continued her love for sports and family, attending the activities and sports of her grandchildren. Barbara also loved to travel and see different places. Barbara continued to bowl in leagues in Las Vegas and Henderson and was also always at all of her competitions. Barbara was a quiet woman, always there for family and spoke with many great words of wisdom. Barbara never judged anyone in her life and kept to herself, respecting everyone she met along the way. Barbara is remembered fondly by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as she assisted with child-care duties throughout most of their childhoods. Barbara was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in her 60’s, but never allowed the illness to change her life, remaining present for all family members while battling through the disease and medication side-effects to the very end. Barbara lived a blessed and beautiful life and will be forever remembered as family gathering to celebrate her and show her the respect and dignity she has earned.
