CARL GEORGE THUROW Carl was born on July 25, 1937 in Oswego, New York. He was the second child born to Mary and Arthur Thurow of Minetto, New York. Carl grew up in Minetto and attended Oswego High School, where he was active in band, chorus, drama and student government, as well as football and wrestling. He graduated from high school in 1955 and later attended Syracuse University for one year to study forestry. He joined the United States Army in 1958, served until 1962, and was honorably discharged. After his release from the military, Carl moved to Henderson, Nevada, where he began a long career in the gaming industry. He started his career as a blackjack dealer at the Eldorado Casino, in Henderson, where he met the woman who would eventually become his wife, Lucille Joslin. Lou was a waitress at the Eldorado and one of the first encounters she had with Carl was when she slapped him because of a statement he made that rubbed her the wrong way. She told Carl if he learned how to speak in a decent manner, she would wait on him. That got his attention and they were married on June 3, 1965. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on June 3, 2016. Although he had never been married, Carl opened his arms and his heart to Lucille and her three sons, Neil, Keith and Ed. He became the father the three boys needed and he loved them as if they were his own. A few years later he legally adopted the three boys. Neil and Keith kept the last name of Joslin but Ed’s last name was changed to Thurow. Carl and Lucille also had a child of their own, Brian, born in October 1967. Carl’s gaming career included several years at the Flamingo Hotel and more than twenty years with the Del Webb Corporation. Carl spent time at the Mint Casino and Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas, and then moved on to the Sahara Casino and Hotel on the Strip. He continued dealing at these locations as well as working relief shifts when needed as Floor Supervisor. When he ended his time with Del Webb, he continued in the gaming industry, taking a job as a bartender at a small casino in Henderson, called Ligouris. One unique aspect of Carl’s career was his fondness for working the graveyard shift, the shift most employees try to avoid. He stayed on the graveyard shift throughout his entire gaming career. After several years at Ligouris, Carl was given the opportunity to work in the Surveillance Department of the new Boulder Station Casino, when Stations Casinos Inc. was launched. This was the opportunity Carl wanted for many years and because of his vast experience, and his fondness for graveyard work, he was hired by Stations Casinos as a Surveillance Operator. He was with Stations for over ten years, until he retired. Carl was proud of his long, successful career in the gaming industry. Throughout five decades of marriage, Carl always had time for his family and never complained about having to do things the family needed. He also had a love for learning. He could always be found reading a book, watching documentaries on television or doing both. He led a simple, happy life. He loved his wife, his children and all of his grandchildren. Carl’s love and devotion for his family was matched by how much he was loved by anyone who came to know him. A quiet man, who never asked much of others, Carl was always available for his family and for anyone who needed his assistance, without any questions, at any time. He was a wonderful husband, a great father and a faithful friend to many. He will be missed. Carl was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, his mother, Mary, and his older sister, Joan, who lived in California at the time of her death. He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille; sons Neil (Becky) Joslin, Keith (Tania) Joslin, Ed (Cindy) Thurow, Brian (Theresa) Thurow; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Services were held Thursday, September 29 at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
