

Major John J. Baker Jr., USMC, Retired, age 67, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Providence Holy Medical Center in Mission Hills, California. He was born August 13, 1955 in Gap, Pennsylvania to John Baker Sr. and Joan Scarborough Baker. John was a 1973 graduate of Pequea Valley High School and then a 1977 graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Science degree.
John joined the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 59, in 1966 where he held the position of Troop Scribe. He was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a scout lifeguard. John was awarded the highest honor of Eagle Scout on January 11, 1972. As a junior, John was on the varsity soccer and chess teams. He was president of the Youth Fellowship at Gap United Methodist Church as well as a member of the Gap Fire Company.
John joined the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant in 1977, where he served his country honorably for 19 years as a Financial Management Officer and a Disbursing Officer, retiring in 1996 as a Major. He joined the Life Care Center of America, Southwest Team, in December 2000, where John dedicated the next 23 years within AP Payroll, as a Business Office Manager, a Division Field Controller and Regional Field Controller. He was a cherished leader and loved by his team. John was enthusiastic about soccer, reading, his dogs and traveling the world.
John is survived by his wife, Jennifer Baker of Las Vegas, NV; his three children: John Baker III and his wife, Jenny Baker of Irvine, CA; Sean Baker and his significant other, Lilee Lopez of Costa Mesa, CA; and Step Daughter, Rei Takeda of San Diego, CA; granddaughter, Brielle Baker of Costa Mesa, CA; his brother, David Baker of Gordonville, PA; and sister, Patricia Neilson and her husband Steven Nielson of Estes Park, CO.
A Service of Honor will be on Friday, April 28, 2023 beginning at 1:00 PM at Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89015. John will be laid to rest with military honors immediately following in Palm Henderson Cemetery, in Henderson, NV.
