R L Scow

RL SCOW RL Scow, 95, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 16, 2017. He was born August 17, 1921, in Deseret, Utah, to Alfred & Annie Scow and was the 4th of nine children. RL attended elementary and secondary grades in Deseret and then high school in Hurricane, UT, when he graduated in 1939. He often told stories about growing up during the depression and how they made a living shearing sheep. After high school, RL attended Dixie College in St. George, UT, and was studying radio communications when he was drafted into the Army Air Corps during WWII. He attended Drury College while stationed in San Antonio, TX, and was training to be a navigator/bombardier on B-17 and B-25 bombers when the war ended. Shortly after the war, RL was living and working in Boulder City, NV, at the Bureau of Mines when he met the love of his life, Patsy Lou Seifang. They wed on December 6, 1947, and had seven children: Nancy (deceased), Kristina, Lisa, Eric, Kurt, Gail, & Howard. RL and Patsy initially lived in St. George, UT, for a short time, but after Nancy’s death, moved to Salt Lake City, UT, because RL wanted to study genetics at the University of Utah to understand what happened to their baby. Eventually RL and Patsy settled in Henderson, NV, in the early 1950s. RL worked for American Potash/Western Electric Chemical Corporation at the BMI complex for 15 years and then went on to study and become a pneumatic control engineer (HVAC) for the Clark County School District. Because of his education in business, he also kept books for Hafen’s OK Tire on Lake Mead in Henderson. RL owned Scow’s Western Auto/RadioShack on Boulder Hwy for 38 years, which also sold True Value hardware and sporting goods equipment. Even though he maintained a full-time career at CCSD, he spent his off hours working at the store with his wife Patsy, son Eric, and the other Scow kids. RL was known for his generosity to many Henderson residents who patronized the store. He was also a “jack of all trades” and was always working on something. RL eventually retired from the school district at the age of 71, but maintained a presence in the store until it closed in 2007 after the death his beloved wife, Patsy. RL spent the last years of his life at home in Henderson where he lived with his son, Eric. He enjoyed reading the Sunday comics in the RJ, watching TCM and 60 Minutes, and the numerous visits from his children and grandchildren. RL was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Patsy, all but one of his siblings, son-in-law Warren Mahaffey, and daughter-in-law Diane Hinton Scow. He is survived by his children: Kristina Mahaffey, Lisa (Floyd) Wilkins, Eric Scow, Kurt (Tammy) Scow, Gail (Carl) Forsyth, and Howard (Sherroll) Scow, 17 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and one sister, Elda Rae Hammond. Viewing will be Thursday, July 20, 2017, from 5-7PM and again at 9:30AM at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Hwy, Henderson. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00AM Friday at Palm Mortuary.
