Stewart was born April 17, 1929, in Syracuse, Nebraska to Vernon and Verna (Smith) Earl. He graduated from Syracuse High School and went on to join the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean War and was able to travel the world during his 22-year career. He held many jobs following his retirement from the Air Force but his final employer was the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Boulder City, Nevada where he was able to retire yet again. Stewart had a passion for writing and wrote many stories, poems, and meaningful letters, but was especially proud of his children’s book, titled “Trouble In the Toy Box” which made him a published author. He rarely sat still, always needing a project. He built a go-cart, a house, remodeled several homes adding those special touches, and went into business constructing commercial properties.
Stewart married Mildred Smith in 1951 and had three sons, Michael, Robert, and John prior to that marriage being dissolved. On March 11, 1962, he married LaVonna June (Brown) Looper. To this marriage, one daughter, Mary was born, but he acquired three additional step-sons, Jim, Keith, and Mike, as well as a step-daughter, Susan, whom he officially adopted in 1964. They had a wonderful marriage of 40 years full of laughter, love, and travel until LaVonna passed away September 6, 2002. Then to Stewart’s delight, along came Charlene Kay MacKenzie, and in his own written words, she was “a breath of spring. A splash of lightness born to catch my eye. I lived again”. Stewart and Kay married, and he acquired two more step-daughters, Colleen and Sheri. Stewart and Kay enjoyed over 20 years together.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Charlene Kay Earl, sons Michael (Joyce) of Havre De Grace, Maryland; Robert (Barbara) Earl of Prescott, Arizona; John (Janice) Earl of Sun City West, Arizona and daughters, Susan (Gary) Eisenhauer of Pawnee City, Nebraska and Mary Landry of Sacramento, California. Step-son, Jim (Kim) Cole of Sacramento, California and step-daughters Colleen (Ron) Kruzel of Parker, Colorado and Sheri (Ron) Knuutila of Henderson, Nevada. He is also survived by a wealth of loving grandchildren (26), and great-grandchildren (23). He loved and was loved in return by so many.
Services will be held at the outdoor committal shelter of the Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests those wishing to honor Stewart to send a donation on his behalf to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://stjude.org.
