Arvin Michael Abernethy

He was born on February 5, 1946, to the late Harold Mosteller Abernethy and Mary Jeannette “Nettie” Phillips Abernethy in Catawba County at the former Richard Baker Hospital, now Frye Regional Medical Center.

Along with his parents, his infant sister Mary Jeanette preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory include his brother, Joe Abernethy and wife Jean of Hickory; nieces, Tina Abernethy Ball and husband Eric of Hickory, Shelley Abernethy Millon and husband Jeff of Alpharetta, GA, and Miram Abernethy Young and husband Steven of Hickory; great niece, Macy Suzanne Millon of Alpharetta, GA; and great nephews, Miles David Millon of Alpharetta, GA and Henry Earl Young of Hickory.

Arvin was the kind of person who radiated warmth and positivity. His vivacious personality and kind heart made it impossible for him to meet a stranger—he had a way of leaving a lasting, uplifting impression on everyone he encountered. For most of his adult life, Arvin found fulfillment working at Hickory Auto Parts, where he not only dedicated himself to his work but also formed lifelong friendships. His passion for cars was evident, as he could easily spend hours admiring and learning about all kinds of vehicles. Arvin also had an undeniable love for sweets and never passed up the chance to indulge in a treat, savoring every opportunity to satisfy his sweet tooth.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon in the Chapel of Hickory Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:45 until 1:45 pm at the funeral home. Reverend Gregg Plott of Ebenezer United Methodist Church will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church, where Arvin will be buried beside his sister. Pallbearers will be Steven Young, Eric Ball, Jeff Millon, Mike Abernethy, Barry Abernethy and Joey Schoch. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Earl Young and Miles David Millon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 80 28th St. NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
