Dean Elvin Powell

Born August 25, 1946, in Lincoln County, NC, he was the son of Vera Johnson Powell of Hickory and the late Fred Franklin Powell. Dean was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hickory where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Dean retired as a Master Sergeant after 34 years of service, including over 20 years active duty, with the NC National Guard. Prior to serving in the NC National Guard he had worked as a barber for over 12 years. Dean also led and was very involved in the Parkinson Support Group for the Hickory area.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Darrell Wayne Powell.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Brenda Smith Powell; sons, Clay Powell and wife, Ching of Columbia, SC and Brian Powell and wife Jaime of Hickory; daughters, Lisa Cunningham and husband, Dave of Conover and Joy Pennell and husband Jack of Hickory; grandchildren, Jordan Powell, Corey Powell, Robbie Powell, Claire Powell, Eric Cunningham, Benjamin Cunningham, Jayden Pennell, Jansen Pennell, and Colton Powell; brother, Larry Franklin Powell and wife Vivian of Hickory; and sisters, Sandra Mauney and husband Gene of Gastonia and Anita Fredell and husband Jerry of Connelly Springs; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Revs. Scott Hooks, Brian Odham and Don Isely officiating. A graveside service with full military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1225 29th Ave Dr. NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
