Born in Madison County, IL, on September 8, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Clemens Walter and Clara Firnhaber Walter. She lived most of her life in Dolton, IL, before she and her husband retired to Florida and later to Newton, N.C.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Edward J. Herman (married 66 years); daughter Elaine M. Herman; sisters Dorothy Woodruff (her twin) and Carol Barnett. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Robbins and was loving mother to daughter, Karen Schaumburg and husband Greg; sons, Richard Herman and wife Debra; David Herman and wife Lynn.
She was a proud grandmother to 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.
In her younger years she loved to bowl at Tri-City Lanes in Dolton, IL, which was owned by her husband, Ed and her brother-in-law, Gene. She also loved reading, gardening, and puzzles.
Her greatest joy was her family and the times she spent with grandchildren and great grandchildren with whom would draw, paint pictures and do puzzles. She also enjoyed spending time with church friends as well as wonderful neighbors. She cherished her time with her caregiver, Ansley, who she thought of as her “adopted daughter” as she did with her niece, Cyndy. Her youngest sister, Joyce, was her best friend. Doris loved the Lord and looked forward to her home visits with Pastor Dave. She was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Hickory since 2006.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Hickory, N. Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doris’s honor to Carolina Caring Hospice
