

Edgar Milton Holsten, of Hickory died in his sleep at his home with his wife of 56 years, Jean Louise Holsten standing close by. Mr. Holsten was born August 29, 1935 in Oceanside, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Carl Holsten and Carrie Elizabeth Holsten of Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY. An active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory; serving as Financial Secretary for 13 years, on church council, senior choir member (second tenor), member of Finance and Stewardship committees, and active with the home visitation group of Matthew 25. He received the Silent Saint award from his church and he delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife, Jean. Ed was very active in the Senior Citizens group now called Adult Fellowship and the Catawba Valley Community chorus for 17 years. Ed was a devotee of 3-D puzzles of famous buildings around the world, constructed over weeks and months.
A devoted husband, and father to sons, Glenn Alan Holsten and wife Kerry and daughter, Kaitlin Joy Holsten of Ijamsville, MD, and Kenneth (Ken) Holsten and wife Susan Lynn and children, Julia Anna Holsten (15) and twin sons, Nicholas (Nick) and Joseph (Joey) born on Christmas morning 8 years ago, of Glen Allen, VA.
Ed graduated in 1957 from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) with a B.S. degree Cum Laude in Printing Management. He commuted to Manhattan, NY by Long Island Railroad for 16 years to his first job in the “Big Apple”. New opportunities brought the family to Baltimore, MD and then to High Point, NC and lastly to Hickory Printing Group in Hickory, NC. Known as a diligent student and employee, he endeared himself to others in love of neighbors, friends, family, God and country. He served for 6 years in the U.S. Army National Guard Reserve.
Ed Holsten is cherished by his family and loved others. In high school, he was 3rd baseman on the baseball team and in retirement, he took up golf and his foursome felt his smooth swing of the golf club was a natural result of all that baseball in high school!! Many shall miss this special gentleman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday February 13, 2016 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory with Rev. Dave Keck officiating. A private inurnment will precede the service in the church columbarium. Following the service, you may greet the family in Heritage Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N Center Street, Hickory, NC 28601 or a charity of one’s choice.
