When Gary Daniel Parsons walked into the room, those in his company felt energy, an enthusiastic spontaneity. This was just one example of who Gary was and how he impacted those around him. Gary was a clever and gregarious person who always sought out the finest attributes in other people. It was as if Gary wanted to share all of their experiences, revel in their lives and celebrate their discoveries. Gary was tireless and had boundless enthusiasm that would serve him well throughout his life.
Gary was born on September 1, 1952 at Valdese General Hospital in Valdese, NC. He was the son of Merit Inez Huffman and Carl Washington Parsons. Gary was raised in Young Road, Hickory, NC. Always at the ready with a good joke, he grew up to be quite a humorous person. While some who knew Gary might describe him as an idealist, his friends and family understood well that Gary was always in pursuit of life’s endless possibilities and opportunities available to him.
Gary was raised with eight siblings. Gladys Harmon, Foard Parsons, Lois Wilson, Jerline Crouch, Joyce Brannock, Mary Chaney, Benny Parsons, and Barry Parsons.Barry and Gary were twins so there was always a wonderful friendship and rivalry going with those two. Gary was very accepting and supportive of his family. He was perceived as the central person in his family in terms of keeping communication open between the family members. Whenever discord or tension arose within the home, Gary was typically the member who brought about resolution and harmony. These traits served Gary well in his adult life and, along with his wit, outgoing personality, and understanding of others, drew the admiration of many who knew him.
As a young boy, Gary was able to empathize and identify with a vast array of people and personality types. This quality drew him into a diverse group of friends and acquaintances. Gary was intelligent and had little trouble getting along with his peers. He was almost always the first to jump in when it came to playing games or participating in other childhood activities. Gary took part in softball games with the neighborhood kids and siblings. He liked to fish and hunt and swim with his brothers and sisters. Future Farmers of America, and Providence Baptist Church. In his spare time he liked to play rook, pinochle, listen to music, and pester his twin brother Barry. He also like baseball cards. He won a trip to Tweetsy for the whole family. Gary had the ability to find amusement with almost any activity he and the many childhood friends he shared might discover.
During his high school years, Gary responded enthusiastically to any new project and was regularly in search of one adventure after another. He graduated from Fred T. Foard High School in He would have graduated in 1970 but decided to join the Air Force and finish there. Gary was a very good student, and generally did well in his courses. Gary absorbed as much as he could from all of his teachers and was consistently able to tackle conceptual and abstract problems, using his imagination to master his assignments. For Gary, school often became just an extension of playtime, thanks to his ability to turn just about anything into a game. Classmates considered Gary a good listener, knowing that when necessary, they could go to him to discuss just about anything. His favorite class in high school was Future Farmers of America. The teacher he enjoyed learning from the most was Coach Jerry Copas.
With a talent for making acquaintances easily which in turn brought him an endless stream of friends, Gary was very sociable and could blend without effort into any social group. Assertive and outgoing, Gary was easy to know and demonstrated a deep concern for others. He always seemed aware of what was going on with people around him and throughout his life he made many, many friends. While growing up, some of his best friends were his brothers, Barry and Benny, and Foard, his neighbor, Johnny Huffman and Donny Lynn. Later in life, he became friends with so many people. He made lots of friends while he was in the Air Force and Army and also while he participated in his favorite hobbies of panning for gold and riding his doon buggy.
On 1971 Gary married Debbie at Gaffney City Hall of Gaffney, SC.
Gary was blessed with three children: one son, Eric and one daughter, Carolyn, with Debbie and also another son, Aaron. Gary was also blessed with 5 grandchildren, Nathaniel, Dallas, Julie, Jacob, and Lillian.
Gary was uplifted by new ideas and was excited by life’s possibilities, traits that made him an exceptional worker. His primary occupation was in the military. He was employed for four years in the U. S. Airforce, 16 years in the U. S. Army, and he also drove a truck for MDI and other companies and worked for Wright Tomato House. Gary was enterprising, inventive and working against deadlines seemed to energize him. Gary had the uncanny ability to identify a win/win solution to just about any problem, possibly because of his gift for insight. Gary's fellow workers saw him as a supporter and a mentor.
Gary was an Air Force and Army veteran. He was in the service during the Vietnam War, Iraq, Desert Storm, Panama. Gary saw action for Vietnam, Iraq, and Kuwait. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Sgt. E-6. He won many awards while he was in the service. They are listed in his time line. His fellow soldiers could count on him for being able to make adjustments to any situation as needed.
Because Gary loved to have a broad variety of activities in his life, he took advantage of the opportunity to pursue numerous hobbies. His favorite pursuits were panning for gold, riding with his doon buggy friends, and he also loved music. Gary had a knack for being able to multi-task in order to create time for all of his favorite pastimes. However, Gary's ever-present concern for others always took precedent.
Gary derived much satisfaction from participating in and watching sports. His charisma, supportive nature and ability to improvise when called upon to do so all made perfect attributes for enjoying a great many sporting activities. Recreational sports included dune buggy riding, horse shoes, and dancing. Gary was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite events whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list were football and Nascar racing.
Throughout his life, Gary was actively involved in professional and community organizations. He was compassionate, accommodating and quick to move into action. Always able to build a consensus, Gary seemed to be the person smack dab in the middle of things, working to get things done. Those who had the opportunity to work with Gary usually agreed that when you were involved in an organization with him, it was as entertaining as anything you could imagine. In high school, Gary was a member of the Future Farmers of America.
Because Gary was constantly in the center of things and where the action was, he always seemed willing to join in and help, regularly getting involved in community activities. Gary's gift of planning and improvisation, along with a talent for rallying support, made him a great asset. Gary found new ways of getting things done in order to help make just about every activity more efficient and enjoyable. Gary was an active member of several community groups, Gary liked to help people. He especially liked to help with children and helped some groups of children to learn about panning for gold. Politically, Gary was a Republican.
Gary was a member of Providence Baptist Church. He was sympathetic and able to empathize with others and he used these qualities to the fullest while working tirelessly for his beliefs.
Though he never did anything solely for individual recognition, Gary's ingenuity, resourcefulness, and selflessness, earned him accolades for his many lifelong efforts. Some of his most prestigious awards included awards that he received during his time served in the military. He also received some wonderful letters from groups of children who participated in some of the camps that he helped with.
Gary's love of improvising in his daily life was a perfect fit for his enjoyment of traveling. His favorite vacations were ones that were not planned. Traveling in a casual manor fit his personality well. Excited about seeing changing scenery and constantly looking for the enjoyment life could offer, Gary took his vacations seriously, well, as seriously as he possibly could. Favorite vacations included going to the mountains and to the beach. He loved to pan for gold in Nebo, NC and he also loved to go to Kentucky and Tennesse. While he was in the service he very much enjoyed his time overseas, especially his time spent in Germany.
Gary was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. Peanut, a sweet small dog, was a best friend for about 8 years. There were other dogs, but none were as special as Peanut.
When Gary's retirement finally came in 1991, Gary handled it the way he usually did. He adapted and, like everything in his life, made it satisfying. Because he was such a flexible person and able to adjust to any situation, retirement was just another enjoyable change of pace for Gary to master. His new life involved relocating to Hickory, NC, his hometown. In retirement, he found new pleasure in panning for gold, working on and riding his doonbuggy, he enjoyed entertaining, and working at Wright's Tomato House. Even in retirement, Gary continued to stay in touch with his old friends and like always, made plenty of new ones.
Gary Parsons passed away on 1/25/2012 at 10:46 A. M. At at home in Hickory, NC. Gary had colon cancer. He fought a brave battle for five long years, as it went to his liver in the end. He is survived by his children Carolyn, Eric; and another son Aaron, his grandchildren Nathaniel, Dallas, Julie, Jacob, and Lillian. Services were held at Providence Baptist Church. Gary was laid to rest in cemetery at Providence Baptist Church.
There was always a certain style and inventiveness to Gary. He was a dynamic, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate the endless possibilities life had to offer. He had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While he was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to Gary Parsons for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. Gary was always more than willing to share life’s experiences with his loved ones. Gary very seldom talked about himself. He liked to find out about others and what made them tick. He loved to joke and have fun. We called him Bodacious because he loved women. He could sit in a room full of women and discuss any subject that came up. Everybody loved him He made everybody he met feel special.

o Carolyn Parsons Russ The best times would be when he would come pick us up and we would spend the time at your place. I would actually get to see my dad's side of the family. Sometimes we would get to ride the dune buggy. But the time we got to spend with him was always to short.February 4 at 4:38pm • Unlike • 2

o Ellen Parsons Everyone knows that Gary loves doon buggies and this love affair has been going on for a long time. Jerry Whisnant's house used to be the guy's hangout, especially on Saturday. One Saturday when the entire group may have been consuming a few beers they were riding the doon buggies around a home made track that Jerry had made for them. Of course they got braver and braver with each trip around the course and when Gary hit a rock, it wasn't pretty. I don't know the entire story (Ask Benny and Jerry) but I think it turned over and he might not have had on a seat belt??? Private Property for you Barney Fifes out there. LOL....) but anyway he managed to drive himself back to our house. I think Mom (Merit was visiting when he arrived.) His mouth was bleeding and he looked pretty bad. I think he lost some teeth. He told us he needed to go to the emergency room When we asked what happened to him, he told us he had been kicked by a cow. I think he had to have some stitches and I believe he was very sore for awhile, but it is a Gary adventure that we will never forget. He was known to tell many people to watch out for rocks.February 4 at 11:47pm • Like • 1
o Richard Harmon I have a lot of fond memories about uncle Gary. When mom and dad would bring us to N.C. in the summer my brother Tim and I would hang out with Gary and Barry. That is, when they were around. I remember numerous old cars they had. One in particular, I think was an old blue 50 something Chevy. Gary always had a hard time starting it and had a can of Zippo lighter fluid that he would squeeze into the carburetor and then come around and mash the starter button on the floor board . It would backfire a few times and finally start. We would then take off down the dirt road with the dust trailing behind us. Gary was pretty good at driving the dirt roads. I don’t remember ever running off in a ditch or wrecking. We never knew how fast we were going, the speedometer didn’t work. It was probably a good thing not to know. On one of our rides, we all went to the South Carolina border and bought fireworks along with genuine M80’s. The younger folks in the family may not know what a real M 80 was. Just imagine a stick of dynamite cut into ¼ sections with an underwater fuse. I can’t remember who had the Idea of tying a rock on one of these and throwing it into the creek, but I was amazed. The thing went off with the sound of a 12 gauge shot gun and I swear I could see the creek bed as the water blew into the air. More stories to come…… February 5 at 7:48pm • Unlike • 3
o Debra Carswell Ledford Gary will always be remembered for big hugs and someone who like to cut a rug and making everyone laugh as he told us stories and oh the stories he told. Gary has been gone almost a year now. He is missed every day. It was really hard this summer because we were used to all his projects and especially his Doon buggy projects. He would run them up and down the road and it would always be loud. And he loved to play the music loud. I enjoyed hearing the music when he turned it up. You could hear it all over the neighborhood. It was also a hoot when he mowed the grass. He would mow even Mom’s yard like he was at the Indy 500 race. Sometimes I think he mowed more rocks than grass.
Wesley, Sherry’s son told us a story about Gary and Wesley taking the bug for a ride one night. He said they were just a barreling out Young Road and all of a sudden the bug starting going from white line to white line. Gary was driving for dear life and cussing like a sailor. One of the seat belts which was loose got caught around the wheel and it was a bad time till it finally broke. Wesley made some comments about kissing the ground when they got back to the house.
Yes he has been missed this year and he is often in our thoughts. I hope those who read these notes will enjoy them. I enjoyed pulling it all together. I think Gary would enjoy reading it himself.
