George and his family fled Ukraine during WWII to escape the invading Soviet army. Fleeing west to Berchtesgaden and finally leaving Germany from Bremerhaven aboard the USS General W.M. Black. The family arrived in America in October 1948 and began their new life in Claiborne, Maryland.
After graduating from St. Michael’s HS in 1951, George attended the University of Maryland and received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. With degree in hand he began his career at Thew Shovel in Lorain, Ohio. For the next 15+ years he honed his skills in the area of cranes and secured patents for his innovations. Some of the cranes he designed were specifically requested to help build the Sydney Opera House.
In April of 1958, he married Maria Malynka in Lorain Ohio.
In 1975, George moved to Bellingham Washington to become Director of Marketing for Skagit Corporation. When Bendix sold Skagit to LTV he stayed on and was promoted to Director of Operations. At LTV, he left his mark on both the timber and international offshore oil industry.
George loved reading and learning about the cosmos, however there two activities that he engaged in with great zeal. The first was golf. He loved the game and was fortunate to have played the great courses around the world with his son including: Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Firestone, Turnberry, Riviera and others. The other was his daily crossword/sudoku puzzle which proved more frustrating than golf.
George retired in 2000 and moved to Florida.
His wife, Maria, preceded him in death in 2004. He is survived by his son Levko. A sister, Oksana Korduba, brother Jarema Klos (Karyn), cousin Daria Darewych (Jurij), as well as, countless individuals who referred to him affectionately as Uncle George.
He was a caring husband and a phenomenal father. His passing will create a profound void for all who knew him.
