

Gilbert Martin Metcalf, 84, of Hickory, passed away May 6, 2017 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born December 26, 1932 in Washington State, he was the son of the late Lynn and Florence Metcalf. Gilbert served in the US Navy for 21 years, having served in Korea and Vietnam. A member of Wesley Memorial Church in Lenoir, he loved his family, loved to sing, dance and was a good poet. In high school, he excelled in track, swimming and football. He was a big Seattle Seahawks and Mariners fan. After his Navy career, he held various manufacturing jobs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Hefner and brother, Douglas Metcalf.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen Osborne Metcalf; children, Deborah Miller, of Hickory, Robin Gross Metcalf of Conover, Deanna and Dennis Hefner of Hickory, Martin and Melanie Metcalf of California and Lisa Metcalf of Granite Falls; 18 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; brothers, Clifford Metcalf and Harvard Metcalf both of Washington state; and sister, Floralynn Metcalf also of Washington state.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2017 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory with Pastor Doug Loudermilk officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Disabled Veterans, 150 Washington Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024.
