Harlan Americus Starnes Sr.

HICKORY - Harlan Americus Starnes, Sr., 84, passed away Jan. 10, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Harlan was born January 31, 1930 in Catawba Co. to the late Arthur I. and Artie Moretz Starnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Parlier Starnes; sister, Charlotte Webb and 3 brothers, Dayton, Kenneth and Keith Starnes. He was a member of First Advent Christian Church, U. S. Air Force veteran served in the Korean conflict and an air traffic controller for Hickory Airport. Surviving are sons; Chris Starnes and wife, Elise of Conover and Harlan Americus Starnes, Jr. of Hickory; daughters, Mary S. Schrum and husband, Bill of Blowing Rock and Teresa Bost and husband, David of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Angela Velasquez of N. J. and Heather Hopson of Ashburn, Va; grandsons, Michael Bost of Crozet, Va, Sydney Starnes of Conover and Isaac Starnes of Conover; great granddaughter, Kyla Hopson of VA; great grandsons, Malachi Hopson, Avery Bost, Ethan Bost and Skyler Bost all of VA.; step granddaughter, Heather S. Fleissner of Hickory. Services will be Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1:00 PM at First Advent Christiana Church with Rev. Rodney Brittain officiating. Interment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #48. The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 17, from 11:00 AM – 12:45 PM at First Advent Christian Church in the fellowship hall.
