

Howard was born July 6, 1924 in Keeney Knob, West Virginia to the late Jettie R. Lively and Macy Mae Stover. He was a Methodist most of his life and later became a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Maiden, NC. Howard served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Oak Leaf Cluster, after being wounded in action at Heilbronn, Germany. He was a 1950 graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Using this degree, he worked as an industrial engineer, eventually retiring from Burlington Industries in 1987as Senior Project Manager. Howard enjoyed travel and history and, after retirement, enjoyed landscaping projects at their home in Greensboro. He had a strong work ethic and was loyal and dedicated in all he did.
In addition to his father, Jettie R. Lively, and mother, Macy Mae Stover, he is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jane B. Lively.
Survivors include his son, H.L. Lively, II of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter, Linda Scott and husband, David Gaston, of Newton, NC; grandchildren, Kevin Scott of Newton, NC, Kelly Scott Mozgala and husband, Jeff, of Hickory, and Joshua Lively Glasson of Durham, NC; and sister, Virginia Ferrell of Seymour, ID. He took great delight in his great granddaughters Sophia Jane Mozgala and Miabella Mozgala.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory, NC. Pastor Nathan Yoder will officiate.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
A visitation will also be held at the McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg, WV at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
