James (Jim) Lando Osborne, 66, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on December 22, 1949 in Ashe County, he was the son of Virginia Atwood Osborne and the late Victor Wayne Osborne.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiancé and best friend, Janese Dockery, of Hickory, who lovingly cared for him throughout his illness.
He is also survived by his sons, Lieutenant Colonel Jamon Osborne of Fort Bragg, Mitchell Osborne of Durham and Garrett Osborne of Hickory; his sisters, Anita Mitchum and husband, Ken, of Granite Falls; Trisha Osborne and partner, Roger Comer, of Taylorsville; Paula Meyer and husband, Marty, of Coconut Creek, Florida; Pam Osborne of Hickory; and brother, Tom and wife Bobbi, of Hickory; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Mitchum, Matthew Mitchum, Kennedy Osborne, Jessi James, Jeffrey Meyer and Thomas Meyer and a great-niece, McCrae Mitchum.
Educated in Hickory City Schools, Jim graduated from Hickory High in 1968. He attended Western Piedmont Community College and served in the United States Army Reserves from April 1970 – February 1976.
His love for boats and the water led to a career in sales of Mastercraft and Correct Craft boats along with other watercraft. Much like his father, he was a jack of all trades and most recently had his own business doing home improvements and landscaping. Whether making a sale, repairing watercraft and vehicles or doing home improvements, Jim’s quick wit and sense of humor helped him make life-long friends of those he served.
A long-time member of the Hickory Elks Lodge, he used his talents to benefit others through Elks Lodge projects and events. His love for music led to his large collection of albums and D.J. turntables which he used in hosting record spinning parties for friends.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Hickory Funeral Home in Hickory on Wednesday morning, December 7, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Jim and Janese’s personal friend, Gayle Coyne, RN, who gave countless hours of assistance, advice and support during this difficult time. They would also like to thank the staffs of Carolina Oncology and the Infusion Center, Radiation and Oncology departments of Frye Regional Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks Lodge Back Pack Program which Jim fervently supported. Checks should be made out to Hickory Elks Lodge 1654; memo: Back Pack Program Jim Osborne and mailed to Hickory Elks Lodge 1654, 356 Main Avenue NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
