John Edward Harris

John Edward "Peto" Harris, 82, of Hickory passed away on December 31, 2016 at Catawba Regional Hospice after a brief illness. He was born on April 20, 1934 in Iredell County to the late James Newton Harris and Amelia Hendren Harris. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1953, and served four years in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge in 1957 he began his career in telecommunications with Central Telephone Company. On October 10, 1958 he married Margaret Holman in Statesville, NC, and in 1966 they moved to Hickory, NC. He retired from the Telecommunications Department of First Union Bank in North Wilkesboro in 1996. John is survived by his wife Margaret Harris of Hickory, son Tim Harris and wife Leslie Harris of Raleigh, son Terry Harris of Charlotte, son Michael Harris of Cary, grandson Bradley Harris of Hickory, and numerous relatives. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at St. Stephens ELCA Church in Hickory on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 12:00 noon.
