Kathy Ann Harkey Everhart was born to Trulie Mae Morton Harkey and Robert Henry Harkey on June 5, 1952 in Salisbury, NC, and is survived by her sisters Brenda McCraw (Dan McCraw) and Joyce Roberts (Larry Roberts). She was the soul, the humor, and the true heartbeat of her family. On March 19, 2026, at the age of 73, Kathy’s journey came to a peaceful close surrounded by her family at her home in Hickory, NC. She’s leaving behind a family that was her greatest pride and her life’s most beautiful work. A woman of sharp intellect, strength, and love is the epitome of Kathy Ann Harkey Everhart.
Kathy placed high value on education and lifelong learning, which she instilled in her family. She was a proud graduate of North Rowan High School class of 1970, and went on to pursue higher education at Wingate University and Catawba College. Her academic background was a source of great pride and provided the foundation for her successful life.
To know Kathy was to know that family wasn’t just a word; it was her life’s greatest accomplishment. It was the way she spent hours on the phone listening, and the one who always had the right advice. She was the one who remembered every birthday, and the glue that held everyone together through life’s journey.
While Kathy filled many roles in her 73 years, her favorite titles were Wife, Mom, and Grandmother. Her legacy of love lives on through her husband of fifty-three years, Stephen Eugene Everhart, and her three children Natalie Everhart Alvarez (Joe Alvarez), Erika Everhart Stephens, and Lukus Eugene Everhart.
The true lights of her life were her five grandchildren: Sydney Ann Stephens (21), Meadow Ofelia Alvarez (20), Crew Anthony Alvarez (19), Maddalyn Alana Stephens (18), and Sophia Erika Stephens (15). To them, she was Gammie. Whether she was cooking delicious meals, sharing a quiet story, or letting them “win” a game of cards, Gammie's love was a gentle love that will stay with them forever!
Kathy’s life was a beautiful balance of a sharp mind and a tender heart. As a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Kathy’s faith was a guiding light throughout her life and an inspiration to all those who knew her. Though she is no longer with us, the warmth of “Gammie’s” love remains an everlasting presence in our hearts. She leaves us with a legacy of kindness and family that will forever carry her spirit forward.
Kathy Ann Harkey Everhart will be celebrated with a private ceremony to honor her life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your local animal shelter would be her wish.
