Mattie Lee Miles Benfield

Mattie Lee Miles Benfield, age 87, formerly of Hickory, NC, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016 at her daughter’s residence in Locust, NC. Born April 29, 1928 in Chesterfield, SC, she was the daughter of the late Walker B. Miles and Nettie Short Miles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Irvin Benfield; 3 brothers, and 6 sisters. Mrs. Benfield was a member of First Baptist Church in Hildebran. She was employed by National Association of State Departments of Agriculture for 20 years and enjoyed interviewing many farmers in the Lincoln, Iredell, and Catawba County areas.Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Donald Irvin Benfield and wife, Martha of Knoxville, TN; daughters, Judy Kay Benfield Tatum and husband, John of Ann Arbor, MI, Janet Lee Benfield Wooten of Locust, NC; brothers, George W. Miles and wife, Jeanne of Colorado Springs, CO, Wade H. Miles and wife, Elizabeth of Ruby, SC, Jerry D. Miles and wife, Linda of Lancaster, SC. Mrs. Benfield is also survived by 5 grandchildren, John Wooten and wife, Melinda of Winston-Salem, NC, Timothy Wooten and wife, Christine of Locust, NC, Daniel Tatum and wife, Gina Barteletti of Seattle, WA, Katharine Tatum and husband, Vincent Sibiodon of Atlanta, GA, Heather Kemmler and husband, Matthew of Knoxville, TN; and 2 great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Deacon Wooten of Locust, NC. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Hildebran, with Rev. Ronald Arndt officiating. Burial will follow in Winklers Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Hickory. The family will receive prior to the service from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., at the church.
