Oscar Tellis Benfield

Born in Burke County on September 12, 1940, he was the son of the late Melvin Oscar and Zalie Elizabeth Chester Benfield.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, Owner/Operator of Superior Heating & Air and attended Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Kathy Denise Benfield and a brother Arnold “Whitey” Benfield.

He is survived by his daughters Sherry Calhoun and husband J.T. of Hickory and Pam Burgoon and husband Tom of Orlando, FL; grandchildren Hayley Burgoon, Ryan Burgoon, Lauren Calhoun, and Reagan Calhoun; partner Charlotte Swanson; sister Sharon Munday of Spruce Pine brother Rex Benfield of Lake James. Best friends Charlie and Mildred Barlow, Tom and Christy Ingersol, Paul and Martha Tate and Howell Greene (late Donna Greene) also survive him.

Memorial service will be held Monday, April 7, 2025 at 4:00 pm at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Heath Benfield officiating.
