Vernon Sherrill Flowers

Vernon Sherrill Flowers passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 24, 2022 in Durham. Vernon was born April 29, 1930 in Winston Salem, NC to the late Dr. Ralph Conrad Flowers and Dorothy Ivey Flowers. He grew up in Hickory, graduated from Columbia University, served in the Air Force as a pilot, then returned to Hickory to co-found Concrete Machinery Company with his father. After retiring, Vernon and his wife moved to Durham, NC. Vernon was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church in Hickory, where he served in many leadership roles.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers George Ivey Flowers and Hugh Conrad Flowers. Vernon dearly loved his family (and the Carolina Tarheels). Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Peggy Langston Flowers of Rome, GA; daughter Jan Flowers Andrews and husband Bill Andrews of Raleigh; and son Vernon Scott Flowers and wife Jeanna Campbell Flowers of Hickory.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church in Hickory with Reverend Paul Christy officiating. The family will have a private burial with military honors.
