Walter Pinckney Hunsucker Jr.

Walter Pinckney HunsucWalter “Junior” P. Hunsucker, Jr., age 96, of Cincinnati, OH passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2024. Born April 8, 1927 in Conover, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Rev. Walter Pinckney Hunsucker, Sr and Annie Mae Boggs Hunsucker. Walter attended Oxford High School, Claremont NC. He then joined the Navy in 1945. After returning from service in Kagoshima Japan, he graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1948. He soon married the girl of his dreams and began his career with Nationwide Insurance. In 1957 he moved his family to Columbus Ohio where he worked in the “home office” until his retirement in 1990. While in Columbus, he was a faithful member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Lincoln Village. In 1999, Walter and his wife Rachel moved to Covington KY to be closer to their beloved grandson. Walter became a member of the Latonia American Legion Post 0203. In his last remaining years he lived in the Cincinnati Withamsville area of Ohio. Throughout his blessed life Walter enjoyed playing volleyball, helping in a catering business, playing penny ante poker with friends, sewing, gardening, and completing many home improvement projects. Walter is survived by his daughter, Tollie H. Chavis (Jim Mandel); grandson, Tyler M. Chavis (Lindy); great-grandson, Luca J. Chavis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Rachel A. Hunsucker (nee Allen); siblings, Elizabeth (Libby) Carpenter (Kenneth E. Carpenter, Sr.), John Franklin Hunsucker, Sr. (Mary Brittain Hunsucker), Mary Ruth Fulbright (Joe R. Fulbright, Sr.); sisters-in-law, Vivian Allen Hager (Ray) and Lucille Allen Pitts (Ralph).

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. with service following at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont. The Rev. Eric Hollar officiating. Committal will be held privately at a later date.

Memorials may be given to Lenoir Rhyne University, Development Office, 625 7th Ave NE, LRU 7546, Hickory, NC 28601; or to Bethel Lutheran Church, 5759 Bolick Rd., Claremont, NC 28610. Walter requested friends to have a Manhattan cocktail in his memory at midnight.
