We stand here, in the quiet place where moments turn to memory, reflecting on the life of William Hamm.
William was a man who knew roads and distance-a trucker, accustomed to seeing the horizon give way to the next destination. Every week, he followed his own unique rhythm, including that comforting constant: every Sunday, the tradition of going up the road. These were our own small, precious mile markers of time. Carroll wrote that Time is a peculiar thing-sometimes a gracious giver, bestowing upon us laughter, knowledge, and love, more than he takes, before he takes. Though the time we were granted with William was short-lived, we can affirm it was profoundly powerful. Yet, Time, in its final guise, is also a thief, and sometimes we hear in the silence the echoing finality of that dark bird's word. A word that seems to whisper, "Nevermore."
But that is where the haunting ends, and the truth of what remains begins.
The years we shared with William Hamm are not lost to the shadow. The gifts of his spirit—his courage, his kindness, his unique spark, and the unwavering path he drove are indelibly etched into our own stories. These are the precious things Time cannot reclaim, the memories that will not succumb to silence.
And so, we look into the looking-glass of the past and know this truth: the good that William Hamm gave is not subject to the final, somber answer. It lives on, forever echoing, not "Nevermore," but Always, Still.
