June 3, 1936 – September 11, 2024
Eleanor was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 3, 1936, the daughter of Anthony Joseph Suchan and Pauline (Herman) Suchan, and one of six children: older daughters Margaret (Peg) and Ann, older son Anthony Jr. (“Tone”), and younger sisters Barbara and Lou Ellen. El married James Clayton Sharp Jr. in Westbury in 1959; he died in 2012.
El worked first as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in Westbury, then stopped after the birth of her last child in 1969. Her lifelong love of baseball drove her to become the first woman Little League team manager in America, the Stefan’s Bakery team in Westbury in 1972. As her children grew up, she returned to work as a secretary, most enjoyable for about a dozen years at Chase Manhattan Bank credit card offices in New Hyde Park, and most memorably for a week at Shea Stadium!
She is survived by her younger sisters Barbara Cheslock of Bethpage, and Lou Ellen Klints of Port Jefferson Station; by her five children Jean Theresa Sharp of Tomkins Cove, NY; James Clayton III of Brighton, Mass.; Robert Anthony of Ogdensburg, NY, Edward Kean of Jericho, NY, and Thomas John of East Hampton, CT with his wife Terry and El’s two grandchildren Taylor and Ryan; and by a beloved multitude of nieces and nephews, mostly still on Long Island.
El’s family will receive relatives and friends at Wagner Funeral Home at 125 W. Old Country Rd (corner of Jerusalem Ave.), Hicksville, NY on Friday September 20, 2024 at 3-5pm and 7-9pm. The funeral Mass will be on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 9am at St. Brigid in Westbury, followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery at St. Charles in Farmingdale.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Eleanor’s memory to the animal care charity of your choice.
