Helga Mitze

Helga Mitze, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of the Plainview community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the age of 98.

Helga was predeceased by her devoted husband, William, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and companionship. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and deep familial devotion. She was the loving mother of Walter (Beth) Mitze and Renate (Tony) Machacek; a treasured grandmother to Stephanie (Greg) Boyd and Samantha; and a proud great-grandmother to Sebastian, who affectionately called her “Oma.” She also leaves behind two devoted nieces, Barbara (Jim) Porreca and Ingrid Heiner, and grand nieces and nephews.

A woman of grace and enduring warmth, Helga found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She had a lifelong passion for gardening and flowers, often spending hours tending to her blooms with care and delight. Summers upstate with her family brought her happiness—those cherished moments filled with laughter, nature, and love.

A devoted member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Helga found comfort and community in her faith. She was a familiar and beloved voice in the church choir, sharing her love of music with all who heard her sing. Helga was also active in the Steuben Society, reflecting her pride in her heritage and her commitment to civic engagement.

Helga's memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her and through the beauty she nurtured in the world around her.

A visitation for Helga will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes, 125 W Old Country Road, Hicksville, NY 11801. A funeral service will occur Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 99 Central Park Rd, Plainview, NY 11803. A committal service will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
