Mathilda “Mattie” as many called her, passed away on January 27th, 2021 at the age of 97. A beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, & friend, was born in Brooklyn, NY to Julia (Chiesa) & Joseph Caruso on August 3, 1923. For over seven decades she called Greenwich Village home, devoting her time to the community as a den mother, Rosarian & parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church. Mattie enjoyed bringing her family together for home cooked meals, and was notoriously known as Mrs. Clean.
Mathilda is predeceased by her husband, Elmo, her son Joseph, & her siblings, Ralph, Rose, Josie, Florence, Amelia, Gloria, & Joseph.
Mathilda is survived by sons John (Rose) and James (Lorraine); Five grandchildren, John (Michele), Michael, Lauren (Michael) McGovern, Amy (Adamo), Valerie ; and five great grandchild, Brianna, Anthony, Madelyn, Isabelle, & Colin. She is further survived by best friend, Mary Zaffiro; along with many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.
