

. Mrs. Dorothy Hunter 93, died at her home on Saturday, October 17, 2015. She had been a resident of High Point since 1947. She was preceded in death by her late husband of 56 years and love of her life, Roy M. Hunter. She is survived by her two sons, Darryl and wife Rhonda of High Point and Keith and wife Terri of Winston Salem. She had 5 grand children, Eric Hunter of Lexington; Kyle and Ryan Hunter of Harrisburg, PA; Emily McKay of Greensboro; and Sarah Hunter of Raleigh, and was preceded in death by a step grandson Shaun Ludwig. She had three great grandchildren. Mrs. Hunter is survived by three sisters, Mildred Bowers and Margie Murchison of Sanford, Ruby Hodgson of Athens, GA and one brother, John Thomas of Powder Springs, GA. The oldest daughter of John and Decie Thomas of Sanford, she was preceded in death by her five brothers Harry, Fred, Bill, Joe and Pat.
Having worked for the Army in Washington, DC during World War II, Mrs. Hunter maintained a strong love of country which was expressed in her efforts working for the care of the country’s veterans and their families. She was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary having joined in 1952. Having held many positions in local Post 619, District and Department levels, she served as State President in 1961-62. Her dedication to the organization resulted in her appointment over several decades to various offices and tasks on the national level. Her last efforts were as the driving force to establish the Erline Mayberry Scholarship as a program focused on a patriotic theme for deserving students. Over her many years of attending the national conventions, she reveled in meeting serving presidents from Richard Nixon’s term to George W. Bush's, receiving handshakes and kisses from each.
Mrs. Hunter was a longtime member of Oakview United Methodist Church serving in many advisory positions as well as being a faithful member of the choir. Having retired from Sears and Roebuck, she volunteered for various local civic activities. Her joys were always her family, her church, her sisters of the Auxiliary, her close knit neighborhood in Oakview and her beloved little dog, Prince.
The Hunter family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her faithful caregivers: Robin, Sabita, Victoria, Denise and Gloria. Because of their devotion and care, she was able to remain in her home.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015, 2:00pm at Sechrest Funeral Chapel in High Point. Burial will follow at Floral Gardens Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1-2pm at funeral home.
