

She was born in San Francisco, a daughter of the Rev. Keiichi Imai and Kiyo I. Imai. She was predeceased by a brother, O.Y. Imai, and a sister, Elizabeth Imai, both of California. She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Knopfler, of Thomasville and three nephews.
She was married to James L. Nelson, who died in 2006.
She attended schools in California and graduated from high school while briefly living in Poston internment camp in Arizona. She attended Pfeiffer Junior College and graduated from High Point College with a degree in music and education. She did graduate studies at The University of North Carolina and the University of California.
She retired in 1983 after 34 years as a teacher in High Point City Schools and Guilford County Schools. She taught at Northwood and Shadybrook elementary schools. She also taught in Forsyth County. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary educational society. She also was a church organist, choir director and piano instructor.
She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and a former associate member of Kernersville Moravian Church.
She loved cats, so memorials may be made to Caswell Pet Lifeline (CaswellPetLifeline.org or P.O. Box 154, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379).
