Ruth Allen Griffith

Ruth Allen Griffith, age 93, passed away June 29, 2016 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield, Jamestown, NC. She was born in High Point to the late Roger Allen Griffith and Lillian Jones Griffith. She was predeceased by her sister, Louise Elliott and her niece, Rebecca Elliott Smoot.

Ruth graduated from High Point High School, High Point College (HPU) with honors and received her Master’s in Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill. Since several girls in her class at High Point College were named Ruth, she was nicknamed “Butch" because of her athletic achievements. She began her career in Statesville City Schools as a middle school language arts and social studies teacher and then taught high school and was a school counselor until her retirement.

Ruth was an active charter member of Covenant Church United Methodist, The Whitlock Class and Circle One. She served on many committees and was a cherished member of the Calvary United Methodist and Covenant Church United Methodist.

She is survived by her loving sister, Betty Griffith, her niece Jayne Elliott, great nieces Megan and Lauren, several great-great nieces, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank everyone at Pennybyrn at Maryfield, and Hospice of the Piedmont, and her many friends for their love and care of Ruth.

Visitation will be at 3:30 with a memorial service at 4:00 on Friday, July 1, at Covenant Church United Methodist, 1526 Skeet Club Road, High Point 27265. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Covenant Church United Methodist.
