Thel was born in Davidson County, March 25, 1930, a son of the late Ernest and Iris Coe Wood. He was in the veneer business for over 50 years and retired from Hayworth Roll and Panel after 43 years of service. Some of Thel’s fondest memories were his escapades with his buddies in the veneer industry. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and play golf and even had a hole-in- one. Thel had a very quick wit and was loved by everyone. He was an active member, Elder, and Sunday School teacher of First Church of Christ (Laurel Oaks Christian Church). He was preceded in death by his brother, Kerney Wood.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Betsy Craven Wood; two daughters, Deborah “Debby” Wood and Denise Brown and husband Bobby; four grandchildren, Chris Johnson and wife Durae Van Wie, Heather Johnson, Melissa Hutchens and Kevin Brown; four great-grandchildren, Mary Kenna Johnson Coley, Madison Hutchens, Kara Hutchens and Devin Brown; one sister, Lois Weavil; his “adopted” son, Mark Trexler; and many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Thel’s life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Davis Chapel by Pastors Scott Carter and Buddy Reed. Burial will follow in Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of High Point Regional ER, ICU, Hayworth Center, as well as the Hospice Home @ High Point; and at-home caregivers, Teresa White and Tricia Cardin for the loving care given to Thel. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont. Online condolences may be made at davisfuneralsandcremations.com.
