Gene Allan "Geno" Sousa, aged 80, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the love of his family. Born on December 16, 1945, in Highland Park, Michigan, Geno was a man of great valor, a devoted family man, and a culinary maestro who left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Geno's life was a testament to his strength and dedication. As a young man, he honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery in combat was recognized with the distinguished Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, and many other badges of valor. After his military service, Geno channeled his passion for food into a successful career as an executive chef, known affectionately to many as Chef Geno. His culinary expertise shone brightly at Coyote Preserve Golf Club in Fenton, MI, Embassy Suites Hotel in Livonia, MI, Sheraton Oaks Hotel Novi, MI and The Holiday Inn Hotel Howell, MI. where his dishes delighted countless patrons.
On August 20, 1984, at Faith Lutheran Church in Oakland County, Michigan, Geno married the love of his life, Peggy (nee O'Brien). Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and the mouthwatering aroma of Geno's cooking. He was a proud father to Gene (Felicia) Sousa, Brian Sousa, and proud stepfather to Kimberly (Erich) Chieca, and a doting grandfather to Molly Chieca, Erika Chieca and Kendrick Sousa. Geno's legacy is further carried on by his brother Gerald (Martha) Sousa, and he is fondly remembered by the Sousa family as a beacon of love and wisdom. He was also preceded in death by his parents Francis and Edna (nee Mitchell) Sousa.
Geno's friendships were as rich and enduring as his life's work. He was the best friend of the late Tim Aurand and his wife Edna, sharing countless memories that spanned decades. His commitment to his fellow veterans remained steadfast throughout his life, as evidenced by his membership in the VFW in Highland and The American Legion.
Spiritual by faith, Geno's spirit was nurtured by his beliefs and his love for his community. His interests were as diverse as his talents. A self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur, Geno found joy in the simple pleasure of a well-crafted cup of coffee. His impressive lasagna was a testament to his creativity in the kitchen, and his love for cooking breakfast was matched only by his enjoyment of dining out for the first meal of the day.
Travel was another of Geno's passions. He cherished his trips up North to Mackinac Island, and his adventures to Savannah, Georgia, New Orleans, the Carolinas, and the East Coast of the United States brought him immense happiness. Each destination was an opportunity to explore, taste, and create new memories.
Described by those who knew him as creative, friendly, and intelligent, Geno's influence was far-reaching and profound. His warm smile, engaging conversations, and heartfelt advice will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
Gene Allan "Geno" Sousa lived a life marked by honor, love, and the joy of sharing his gifts with the world. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
