

Beloved husband of Bonita for 58 years. Loving father of Jason (Brandi) Fong and Wendy (Chris VanWert) Fong. Proud grandfather of Maximillian an Rembrandt. Brother of Colin Fong, Doreen (Herman) Chan-Pensley, Philip Fong and Joyce Fong. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Edward and David Fong.
Walter Lee Fong was born September 30, 1942 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Kim lin Lee Fong and Leung Chun Lee Fong. He grew up in a family of five brothers and two sisters. After graduating from high school as valedictorian of his class, he boarded a steam ship bound for Boston, Massachusetts. Upon arrival, he proceeded to the University of Minnesota where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. Mr. Fong was a retired chemical engineer. In the 1970's he worked for Rayovac where he developed the first battery used in the Polaroid camera. After moving to Michigan he continued his career and became a pioneer in the development of the first battery used to power the electric car which later was featured on "Good Morning America". He was also employed with Chrysler where he was involved in the safety features and crash tests at the Chelsea Chrysler Proving Grounds. His career with Chrysler led him to develop the safety material that would eventually minimize injury to vehicle occupants nationwide.
After retiring he resumed his love for ping pong and played often at the Waterford Recreation Club. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and vacationing all over the country. His special talents and kind heart will be very much missed by all.
Per his wishes a private cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
