Hazel Vuurens, age 82, lifelong resident of Holland, passed from earth to heaven on Sunday, January 11, 2015, finally losing her battle against cancer, to be with Jesus Christ. Born on May 8, 1932 to Harvey and Maria Bouwman she married her fellow Christian and friend Walter Vuurens and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary.
Being a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother, Hazel’s focus was always on family. This included bringing her children up in a Christian home. Hazel was a member of 6th Reformed Church for many years before membership in Potter’s Wheel Bible Church for 40 years. She loved spending time with family and friends, reading, solving puzzles, working with children in the nursery and Sunday School and directing hospitality at church. Hazel was very thankful for and used her gift of singing in church, nursing homes and local missions. These attributes impacted many lives with her true love and concern for others and for Christ.
Hazel is survived by her husband Walter, children Pamela (Jim Butts) Hemingway, Rod (Karen) Vuurens, Karri (Steve) Ouwerkerk and Janet (Jeff) Achterhof. Also surviving are siblings Thelma Thompson, Marilyn Soulliere, Gayle (Wendell) Kollen, Glenda Smith, Brent (Patricia) Bouwman, and Gary (Charlene) Bouwman and sister-in-law Theresa Bouwman along with being blessed with seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother Loren Bouwman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holland Rescue Mission.
Her Homegoing service will be held June 6, 2015, at the Old Chapel at Central Wesleyan Church, 446 West 40th Street, Holland, Michigan.
Visitation will be at 4:00 PM and Service to follow at 5:00 PM.
