Lorene Marie “Sally” Murray, age 92, of Holland, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 31, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Murray, in 1999; by a granddaughter, Suni Fichtner, in 2014; and by sisters Imorene Denton in 1998, Betty Crider in 2000, and Lacine Carter in 2016. She is survived by her children, Gayle and Palmer Fichtner of Yucaipa, CA, Greg and Kathy Murray of Holland; grandchildren Dylan Murray of Berkeley CA, Katie Fichtner of Redlands CA, and Ryan Murray of Holland; brother and sisters James “Jake” and Sarah Lee of Santa Clarita CA, Catherine Bridwell of Phoenix AZ, Edna Frank of Oklahoma City OK, Rose and Charles Kerr of Little Rock AR, and Brenda and Ralph Watson of Ozark AR; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a longtime member of Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch, CA.
Raised on an Arkansas farm during the depression, Sally migrated to California just after high school. She ran a turret lathe at Adel Aircraft making parts for bombers during WWII, and while there she met Max Murray, who had migrated from Illinois. They married in 1946, and after a time in California they moved to Chicago where they started a family. They returned to Granada Hills, California in 1957, and Sally lived in the same house there for the next 50 years. Over her working life, Sally worked in manufacturing, as a waitress, and in retail clothing sales and management, all while maintaining a home and being a mother. She loved gardening, but couldn’t stand in the yard for long without looking for weeds to pull! Sally moved to Holland, MI in 2007 to be near her son’s family, and she lived at the LakeSide Vista retirement community until her death. Funeral services and burial will be on 14 January at Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland (MI).
