Melvin Hirdes

Melvin Hirdes, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Providence Health Care of Zeeland. Melvin was a veteran of the army in WWII. After his service, he went on to be a longtime employee of General Electric.

He was a member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; grandson, Isaac John Hirdes; brother, Elmer Hirdes; and sister, Rosella Nykamp.

Melvin is survived by his children, Cary and Judy Hirdes, Randall and Wilma Hirdes, Laurel and Robert Kaniff of Arizona, Steven and Sandra Hirdes of Arizona, Tamela and David Ertman, Beverly Kirkland of Arizona; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Dolorus Klingenberg, Calvin and Donna Hirdes, Karen and Robert Breuker; sister-in-law Dorothea Engelsman; brother-in-law, Jack Nykamp; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Christian Reformed Church, 11 East 32nd Street, in Holland. Rev. Scott DeVries will be officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 23, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. at Lakeshore Memorial Services, 11939 James Street, in Holland. Memorial contributions may be made to Forgotten Man Ministries, 3940 Fruit Ridge Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, MI, 49544
