Merritt was born on June 5th, 1934. In his lifetime he had many jobs, including driving a truck delivering turkeys, working with Dick Timmer delivering coal to many homes in the Zeeland and Holland area. He later became a police officer for the City of Zeeland, but he found his place at the Ottawa County Road Commission, first as manual labor and later as a supervisor, where he worked their until his retirement over 20 years ago. As charter members at Sandy Pines he spent many weekends golfing, boating, and socializing with countless friends. Throughout their life together they always enjoyed country music and were a part of a square dancing club for several years. They enjoyed riding with the Goldwing group on dinner trips and long cross-country excursions. He loved to garden and take long drives in the countryside. The past 21 years they have made their annual winter trip to Florida to get away from the Michigan cold. Merritt loved his family and spending time with them whenever it was possible.
