“Does God always forgive sins,” a boy asked Richard Hudelson during a Sunday School class session. This got Richard to thinking that maybe God was using the question and its positive explanation to call Richard to ministry. He, a native of Indianapolis, had been the skipper of a landing craft in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, and afterwards, an accountant with his Uncle Ralph.
In 1947, he accepted the Lord’s call and enrolled in Princeton Theological Seminary where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree. Here he met, and finally married Peggy Hurrell. Later he had Presbyterian pastorates in Indiana, the Chicago area, and Michigan. He retired to Holland, MI, where he taught Bible classes in retirement centers and served as visiting pastor for Faith CRC. With a grin, he declared that in 1950 he received his first call to a church, his first car, and his first wife. “After 64 years, I still have my first wife.”
Richard and Peggy have married sons, John and Mary, Adam and Kim, Daniel and Joan; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. When asked what advice he would give to others, Richard said, “Listen to the Lord.”
His memorial service will be held at Faith Christian Reformed Church, 85 West 26th Street on Saturday, October 17 at two o’clock. Visitation will be held Friday evening in the church from six o’clock until eight. Memorial gifts can be given to Faith CRC Mission Fund.
