Benigno Lago

Benigno (Benny) Lago Sr., 85, of Pembroke Pines, FL, passed away peacefully at his home on February 22, 2024 at 12:15pm EST, in Pembroke Pines, FL.

Benny was born in Cueto, Cuba, son of Manuel Lago and Manuela(Romero) Lago on October 5, 1938. He was the only surviving child of 7 children, three sons and four daughters.  He attended school in Cuba and moved to Milwaukee, WI, with his family in 1959.  Aspiring to succeed in this country, he quickly found a job peeling potatoes in a local restaurant. He also aspired to learn machinery, plumbing, and construction, which eventually landed him a factory job in Milwaukee, WI. In 1968, while working in the factory, he met the love of his life, Noemi (Figueroa), whom he married on July 4th, 1970. A year later, in June 1971, their daughter, Cindya Marie Lago, was born. Two years later, their son, Benny Lago Jr, was born in April 1973. He also was the father of 2 other children from prior marriage, Robert Lago and Kimberly Price. 

In 1978, Benny moved his family to sunny South Florida, where his first residence was in Hialeah, FL. This same year, in a month, he left his factory job because he was called by the Pastor of the Catholic Church to begin working as a Maintenance Supervisor at the Immaculate Conception of Mary Catholic Church in Hialeah. While there, he honed his skills in plumbing, electrical, and construction and assisted in other general services. This also afforded him the opportunity to help his church community with their home maintenance needs. His good heart was always willing to offer an excellent hand to anyone who needed it in any way he could. Sadly, in 1989, his daughter was diagnosed with lupus, requiring a kidney transplant from her mother in September 1990 . His love and support as a father helped her overcome many health challenges.

In 1991, Benny was asked to work for St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Miami Shores, FL. In 1993, he and his family moved to Pembroke Pines, FL, where they currently reside. In 1996, he again committed to supporting his daughter through a difficult period of health. Tragically, lupus took Cindy's life in 2000. Benny continued to work until he finally retired in 2011 at the age of 73. In 2012, his health presented a difficult challenge when he was diagnosed with dementia.

Over the next 12 years, Benny remained committed to his church, his health, and his family, including supporting his wife with her cancer diagnosis in 2020. His life is a testament to his drive and determination to support those he loved and always be in the life of family and friends. Those who knew him enjoyed his company, his laughter, and his impressive dancing skills. Benny was someone who set the example of a loyal and supportive husband, father and friend. Although he may be gone, he will never be forgotten.

Benny is survived by his spouse, Noemi Lago; his sons, Benny and Robert Lago; his daughter, Kimberly Price; and his grandchildren, Aidan Lago, Jasmine Fernandez, Kylo Lago, Robert Lago Jr., Sarah, Kyle, Gaby, and Lucy Price. 

A celebration of life and condolence gathering will be held at 6 p.m. EST, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Fred Hunter Funeral Home at 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, FL 33026.

The family of Benny Lago wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the nurses and assistants at Easter Seals Senior Care Center and the church community at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Benny nació en Cueto, Cuba, hijo de Manuel Lago y Manuela (Romero) Lago el 5 de Octubre de 1938. Fue el único hijo sobreviviente de 7 hijos, tres hijos y cuatro hijas. Asistió a la escuela en Cuba y se mudó a Milwaukee, WI, con su familia en 1959. Aspirando a tener éxito en este país, rápidamente encontró trabajo pelando papas en un restaurante local. También aspiraba a aprender maquinaria, plomería y construcción, lo que finalmente le consiguió un trabajo en una fábrica en Milwaukee, WI. En 1968, mientras trabajaba en la fábrica, conoció al amor de su vida, Noemí (Figueroa), con quien se casó el 4 de Julio de 1970. Un año después, Junio 1971, nació su hija, Cindya Marie Lago. Dos años después en Abril 1973, nació su hijo, Benny Lago Jr. El también era (1963) padre de otros 2 hijos de otro matrimonio anterior, Robert Lago y Kimberly Price.

En 1978, Benny se mudó con su familia al soleado sur de Florida, donde tuvo su primera residencia en Hialeah, FL. Este mismo año, en un mes, dejó su trabajo en la fábrica porque fue llamado por el Pastor de la Iglesia Católica para comenzar a trabajar como Supervisor de Mantenimiento en la Iglesia Católica Inmaculada Concepción de María en Hialeah. Mientras estuvo allí, perfeccionó sus habilidades de plomería, electricidad y construcción, y ayudando de otros servicios en general. Esto también le brindó la oportunidad de ayudar a la comunidad de su iglesia con las necesidades de mantenimiento de su hogar. Su buen corazón siempre estuvo dispuesto a ofrecer una excelente mano a quien la necesitara en cualquier forma que pudiera. Lamentablemente, en 1989, a su hija le diagnosticaron lupus y requirió un trasplante de riñón en septiembre de 1990 que recibio de su mama Noemi. Su amor y apoyo como padre la ayudaron a superar muchos problemas de salud.

En 1991, Benny fue enviado a trabajar para la iglesia católica Santa Rosa de Lima en Miami Shores, FL. En 1993, él y su familia se mudaron a Pembroke Pines, FL, donde residen actualmente. En 1996, nuevamente se comprometió a apoyar a su hija durante un período difícil de salud. Trágicamente, el lupus acabó con la vida de Cindy en el año 2000. Benny continuó trabajando hasta que finalmente se retiro en 2011 a la edad de 73 años. En 2012, su salud presentó un desafío difícil cuando le diagnosticaron demencia.

Durante los siguientes 12 años, Benny se mantuvo comprometido con su iglesia, su salud y su familia, incluido el apoyo a su esposa con su diagnóstico de cáncer en 2020. Su vida es un testimonio de su impulso y determinación para apoyar a quienes amaba y estar siempre en la vida de familia y los amigos. Quienes lo conocieron disfrutaron de su compañía, su risa y sus impresionantes habilidades de baile. Benny fue alguien que dio el ejemplo de esposo, padre y amigo leal y solidario. Aunque puede que ya no esté, nunca será olvidado.

A Benny le sobreviven su esposa, Noemí Lago; sus hijos, Benny Jr. y Robert Lago; su hija, Kimberly Price; y sus nietos, Aidan Lago, Jasmine Fernandez, Kylo Lago, Robert Lago Jr., Sarah, Kyle, Gaby y Lucy Price.

Se llevará a cabo una reunión de celebración de la vida y condolencias a las 6 p.m. EST, el Jueves 29 de Febrero de 2024, en la Funeraria Fred Hunter en la dirección 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, FL 33026.
